What register cleaning actually involves in a Houston house
Most homes here run flexible insulated duct through a vented attic, with sheet-metal plenums and trunks at the air handler. The ceiling register is the last six inches of that system. Behind the grille sits a sheet-metal boot. That boot is where fine clay-silt dust and leftover construction debris settle.
Gray fuzz on the blade edges usually means air is getting around the filter, not through it. Check the filter slot for gaps. Dark streaking fanned out on the ceiling paint is different. That is a leaky boot pulling attic air past the flange. Cleaning the grille will not stop the streak returning.
The work itself: drop the grille, soak and scrub it away from the house, then HEPA-vacuum and brush the boot interior and the collar. We check the inner liner where it clamps to the boot. Torn liner shows as loose fiber at the collar. Boot seams get mastic, not tape.
In older postwar ranch homes with slab-level return plenums, registers reload fast because the return is drawing dust at floor height. We say so up front.
If you see black speckling on cold supply registers in August, that is condensation on the duct. The register is only the symptom.
