What air filter replacement actually involves in Houston homes

Houston air handlers mostly sit in vented attics. The return path is flexible insulated duct feeding a sheet-metal plenum. That matters. A sagging or crushed flex return starves the blower before the filter is even dirty. Replacing the filter does not fix that. We look at both.

Filter location varies by house age. Older homes often have a filter grille in a hallway ceiling or wall. Newer builds put a media cabinet at the furnace. Some slab-level return plenums are framed into the wall cavity itself. Those pull in fine clay-silt dust through gaps. You change filters constantly and still get gray film on registers. Sealing the plenum is the real repair.

Thickness is not a free upgrade. A one-inch slot will not take a four-inch media filter. Jamming a high-restriction pleat into an undersized return raises static pressure. The coil runs colder. In humid attic air, that invites condensation and microbial growth on cold duct surfaces. We check the rack size and the duct it feeds before recommending anything denser.
